Digital Coins Network (DCN)

Introduction

The Digital Coins Network promotes the effective use of information technolgoy in the collection, exchange, and publication of numismatic data. It identifies existing standards that can be useful to numismatists and provides a forum for the development of new standards that meet the specific needs of the numismatic community.

Current DCN Projects

  • The Numismatic Database Standard (NUDS) is working to define a standardized set of fields to describe numismatic objects within the context of a column-oriented database. It recognizes that many tens of thousands of records already exist in traditional relational databases. A set of shared fields will promote the exchange of this exisiting information. An overview of all the proposed fields is currently under development. There is also a proposal for a xml-based NUDS-Exchange format.
  • A NUDS testbed. DCN is collecting a set of numismatic records that will inform the development of NUDS as well as test its utility.

People

DCN is a collaborative project with many contributors. Its activities are currently co-ordinated by Sebastian Heath and Andrew Meadows of the American Numismatic Society.
